If you have been with us for a while, then you know we have been pretty creative with Twinkies lately. In case you missed it, we made Spooky Twinkie Mummies and shared our DIY Twinkie Frankenstein Recipe around Halloween. Well now we got a little more brave and made these Thanksgiving Turkey Twinkies! Super cute, right?? I know this may look a little intimidating, but the recipe below (and pictures) will show you how to do it step-by-step!

Thanksgiving Twinkie Turkeys

Prep Time 45 minutes
Cook Time 6 minutes
Total Time 51 minutes
Course Dessert
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 6 Twinkies
  • 16 oz of melting chocolate
  • 12 candy eye decorations
  • 6 Famous Chocolate Wafers
  • 3 orange Starburst
  • 1/8 cup of orange melting chips
  • 1/8 cup of red melting chips
  • 1/8 cup of yellow melting chips

Instructions

  • Place Twinkies in the freezer for at least 30 minutes.
  • Prepare a baking sheet or cutting board by covering with parchment or wax paper.
  • Take each of the colors of the melting chips and place into separate zippered sandwich bags.
  • Microwave each for 45 seconds and knead to insure that they are melted and smooth.
  • Clip a small corner of the bags and pipe stripes to resemble feathers on the chocolate wafers.
  • Place wafers on the prepared paper and put into the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set.
  • Cut each Starburst in half diagonally and mold to resemble a beak. Set aside.
  • Melt chocolate candy chips by microwaving 30 seconds then stirring and repeating until melted.
  • Take each frozen Twinkie and make two cuts: a 45 degree cut and a vertical cut (see picture).
  • Take the straight end cut piece and dip into the melted chocolate shaking off excess. Then place on prepared paper.
  • Take the middle piece and dip in chocolate shaking off excess and place on paper sandwiching the wafer between the two pieces at the vertical cut.
  • Dip remaining Twinkie piece in chocolate shaking off excess and place diagonal cut against other diagonal cut so that the "head" is oriented upwards.
  • Place the beak on the head.
  • Place 2 eyes above the beak.
  • Place turkeys in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set.
  • Lift each Twinkie to separate from paper. Using a knife, carefully trim excess chocolate that ran off of the turkeys.
  • Take red chips in baggie and pipe a waddle on the beak and down the neck of each turkey.
  • Place in refrigerator for 10 minutes to set.

The only actual cook time for these Thanksgiving Twinkie Turkeys is melting the chocolate. It’s mostly just putting it together and decorating it. It’s hard to describe the pieces in the recipe, so the picture should really help. You will basically flip the front piece of the Twinkie around so the “head” is upright, then wedge the chocolate wafer between the two end pieces. It will all stick together with the chocolate.
